The scanner reads the light from the bed at a 45-degree angle. Since light does not always reflect at a 45 degree angle, most color and grayscale scanned images appear slightly blurred and will need sharpening. MiraScan can apply sharpness automatically to the image and make images look crisp. We recommend some amount of sharpness be applied to every color or grayscale scanning images especially in conjunction with rotation or descreening. When you click on the sharpen icon tool, MiraScan sharpens the image automatically. Auto Sharpening compares a pixel with the pixels around it and adds contrast. High values increase the amount of contrast and sharpen the image.
In the Filter combo box of Enhancement dialog, you can choose the filter effect from the list: No filter, Sharpen, Sharpen more, Blur, Blur more and Unsharp Masking.
If Unsharp option is selected, the dialog shown in the right will be opened. In this dialog box, you can adjust the sharpness accurately. Dragging the scroll bar to the left will blur the image, or vice versa. You can also directly enter the desired value in the Amount entry box to change the sharpness. Press the OK button when you get the desired effect to confirm your settings ,or press the Cancel button to cancel your settings and close the dialog box.
Occasionally, you may wish to scan a picture that has been printed with a halftone such as one you would find in a book or a magazine. Magazine pictures cannot be scanned as well as a photograph because they have lower quality. The reason is that these pictures have been printed with a series of tiny dots that make up the image. When scanned, a scanner's imaging assembly will emphasize some of these dots and not others creating a pattern called a moire pattern. For best results, only scan from a photograph or transparency when possible. However, if you do want to scan a printed picture, click on the Descreen button to automatically improve the image. The DeScreen filter improves the image by removing the moire pattern by blending the dots into surrounding dots and converting them into shades of gray. This feature works best at maximum sampling resolution but greatly increases scanning time.
To
adjust the descreen effect, you can choose among No Descreen, Newspaper, Magazine,
Art print and Custom..
Click Custom to open the dialog shown in the right. In the Descreen
box, you can make precise adjustment to eliminate the moire pattern. You can
adjust the descreen value between 50 and 200 by dragging the scroll bar towards
the right or the left, or directly enter the desired value into the Descreen
entry box . Press the OK button when you get the desired effect to confirm your
settings ,or press the Cancel button to cancel your settings and close the dialog
box.
