Descreen

Occasionally, you may wish to scan a picture printed with a halftone such as one you would find in a book or a magazine. Magazine pictures cannot be scanned as well as a photograph because they have lower quality. The reason is that these pictures have been printed with a series of tiny dots that make up the image. When scanned, a scanner's imaging assembly will emphasize some of these dots and not others creating a pattern called a moire pattern. For best results, only scan from a photograph or transparency when possible. However, if you do want to scan a printed picture, click on the relevant descreen effect to automatically improve the image. The descreen filter improves the image through removing the moire pattern by blending the dots into surrounding dots and converting them into shades of gray. This feature works best at maximum sampling resolution but greatly increases scanning time.

In this dialog box, you can adjust the descreen value manually between 50 and 200 by dragging the scroll bar towards the right or the left. You can also directly enter the desired value in the Descreen entry box to set the descreen. When you get the desired effect, press the OK button to confirm your settings and close the dialog box. If you are not satisfied with the adjustment, press the Cancel button to cancel your settings and close the dialog box.
